PAUL Carden was happy with how his Warrington Town side responded to some harsh words at half-time during their 1-0 victory over Marine.

After a goalless first half, Yellows emerged for the second half with renewed vigour and a dominant spell culminated in Michael Monaghan’s winning goal just before the hour mark.

Town resisted Marine’s pressure in the final stages to extend their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions, but Carden says the energy his side put into Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Buxton may have hindered them in the first period.

“I thought we were too slow and accepting of what the game was in the first half,” he said.

“We did have a go at half-time because we needed to. Looking at the situation on Saturday, with the conditions we played in and having 10 men may have had a bit of a knock on effect.

“We said after the game that sometimes you just need to dog a result out and that’s what we did.”

The result also means four of Town’s unbeaten matches have featured clean sheets and the Yellows boss hailed the team effort in ensuring Tony McMillan’s goal remained untroubled.

“I’m also pleased to keep the clean sheet, which is what we’ve got to build on,” he said.

“To be fair to Marine, the kid who taking the corners in put four or five really good deliveries in but we’ve defended it well.

“We had people like Ruben Jerome and Mitch Duggan heading them out as well as the centre-backs so everyone was playing their part on the ugly side of it.”

Having played five matches in a little over two weeks, Warrington now have a free weekend and are next in action on Tuesday night, when Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders Blyth Spartans arrive at Cantilever Park.

Carden admits there are some battered and bruised bodies in the Yellows dressing room and the rest has come at a good time.

“We’ve got the chance to have a bit of a breather now in terms of training this week, we’ll start work on Saturday now ahead of the Blyth game on Tuesday,” he said.

“The lads have played a lot of games, we’ve had a few called off but games have come thick and fast over the last fortnight.

“There’s a few guys that have got knocks so we’re looking forward to resting up a bit.”
