WARRINGTON Town manager Paul Carden says he wants his side to play “with flair” but also be “variable” in their approach.

The new Yellows boss, who was appointed along with first-team coach Mark Beesley last week, oversaw the 2-0 defeat to Nantwich Town at Cantilever Park on Saturday.

Since then, the new regime has been completed with the arrival of former Town central defender Craig Robinson – the scorer of that winning goal in the FA Cup giant-killing of Exeter City in 2014 – as assistant manager.

A combative midfielder in his playing days, Carden wants his Town team to reflect his own personal stance on the game.

“Not many teams are successful without working hard. That’s the least I expect,” he said.

“That’s how I was as a player, I worked hard and chased lost causes and I want the lads to do the same.

“I like my teams to attack and play with flair but we need to have a solution to whatever the opposition throws at us.

“If that means we need to go long and get the ball forward quicker, that’s what we’ll do. We need to have that variation.”

Carden can list Rochdale, Chester and Cambridge United among his former clubs before becoming manager at Southport in 2015.

He kept them in the Conference National before joining Tranmere Rovers as a coach.

The 37-year-old had a spell as interim manager at Prenton Park before replacing Stuart Mellish and Lee Smith at Warrington.

Carden says it will not take too long to get his ideas across to the Yellows players.

“I’ve come across a lot of the lads for different clubs up and down the leagues,” he said.

“I know what a lot of them are about. I haven’t worked with a few of them before but it doesn’t take too long to discover what they are about.”

The first test for Carden, Robinson and Beesley as a management trio will be a trip to Stafford Rangers on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Robinson, who had been on the playing books at Trafford, has hung up his boots to take up his first assistant’s role.

Chairman Toby Macormac is pleased to have him on board.

“Craig is the final piece of the jigsaw with our staff changes and one which will add further leadership and knowledge at our level of the game,” he said.

After the weekend, Yellows will next be in action at Ashton United in the Integro League Cup first round on Tuesday, November 15.
