Warrington Town 1 Buxton 0

WARRINGTON Town bounced back from their weekend humbling at Skelmersdale with an impressive victory over league leaders Buxton.

Substitute Mike Grogan headed the winner just before half-time for the Yellows, who move back up to fifth in the Evo-Stik Premier Division table.

There was one piece of headline team news for Stuart Mellish’s side as regular goalkeeper Karl Wills was named on the bench, with former Chester stopper Jon Worsnop being drafted in for his debut at Cantilever Park.

The game started at a frenetic pace without too much in the way of goalmouth action, with Steven Gillespie having two shots in quick succession blocked by the Bucks defence.

Town then started to press more and Jay McCarten screwed an effort just wide after visiting keeper Jan Budtz dropped a corner.

Skipper Ciaran Kilheeney had a glorious chance to open the scoring when he was through one-on-one with Budtz, but his attempted lob fell wide.

However, Town were able to forget all about the miss just two minutes later when they opened the scoring.

Gillespie found a marauding Scott Metcalfe on the left wing and he produced the perfect cross for Grogan, who had replaced the injured Gerard Kinsella early on, to plant a diving header into the far corner.

Chances for the visitors had been few and far between, but Alastair Taylor came close to an equaliser shortly after the break when his volley was just too high.

The best chances were still falling the way of the Yellows and Kilheeney in particular, with Budtz being quick off his line to deny him a shot at goal after a back pass fell short.

He came even closer ten minutes later when a Metcalfe free kick flicked off him and onto the crossbar.

Taylor again came close to levelling matters when two quick through balls released him, but Worsnop was quick off his line to distract him and he could only place his lob over the bar.

Town dropped deeper and invited pressure in the closing stages, but their defence held firm to ensure the perfect response to Saturday’s defeat.

They are at home again on Saturday when they entertain Workington, kick off 3pm.
