WARRINGTON Town defeated Stourbridge, sixth-place finishers last term, in their first game of the new season in the top flight.

The Yellows, playing their first ever game in the Evo-Stik Northern League Premier Division after last season’s championship success, sealed their historic win with two goals in the first half in front of 321 supporters at Cantilever Park.

Both goals were scored by Danny Ventre from set pieces.

His corner went straight in to put Stuart Mellish’s side 1-0 ahead after 19 minutes and he fired home a free kick nine minutes before the interval.

It was Ventre’s cross from which Scott Harries’ shot brought the corner that led to the opening goal.

Town had a let-off in the 57th minute when Justin Richards’ penalty hit the crossbar.
