WARRINGTON Town boss Stuart Mellish praised the character of his side after they moved closer to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North title.

Following a 2-1 defeat at Lancaster on Saturday, Town went behind at home to Witton on Monday before a brace from skipper Ciaran Kilheeney and further strikes from Daniel O’Donnell and Jay McCarten saw the Yellows roar back to win 4-2.

Second-placed Spennymoor can reach a maximum of 97 points if they win their remaining games and, with Town already on 91, they need seven more to be certain of promotion.

Brighouse visit Cantilever Park this Saturday.

Mellish hailed the spirit of his players, saying their response to adversity bore the hallmark of champions.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose [at Lancaster],” he said.

“Their goals had an element of fortune about them, and I felt we deserved something from the game.

“After going behind in the Witton game, the lads showed great character to bounce back.

“All wins are big wins, but the sign of a good team is recovering after a defeat.

“We’ve had a difficult weekend, but we’ve come through it positively and we’re a step closer.”

If all goes to plan, Town could reach their milestone away to Radcliffe on Tuesday week, April 12.

However Mellish insists nobody is getting carried away.

“We know what we have to do; we’ll focus on ourselves and we’ll keep our feet on the ground,” he added.

“Spennymoor are a good side, and difficult to beat, so we will give them the utmost respect and I’m sure they will push us all the way.”

Warrington’s focus is on securing a third win of the season against a Brighouse side currently sat 13th.

“They’re a big side who can play decent football,” said Mellish.

“Beating them twice already will count for nothing."

“We’ll treat the game like any other, and we’ll treat our opponents with the respect that they deserve.”
