Lancaster City 2 Warrington Town 1

RARE this season, but Warrington Town failed to defeat Lancaster City for a second time when they met in Evo-stik Northern Premier League First Division North on Saturday afternoon.

Yellows, chasing the title, drew 1-1 at home to Lancaster in September and made it five missed points when they fell short of clawing back a 2-0 deficit at The Giant Axe.

Ben Deegan cut the deficit in half with a headed goal in the 67th minute but it proved not to be enough as Town fell to only their fourth league loss of the season.

Jay McCarten, Ciaran Kilheeney and Gerard Kinsella all had chances in injury time to rescue a point for Stuart Mellish’s side but the first was cleared off the line, the next well saved and the last one deflected wide.

Lancaster’s goals, both in the second half, had a touch of fortune about them.

From a scramble in the penalty area Clark managed to put his side in front in the 54th minute, while the decisive second from skipper Craig Carney took a deflection to leave keeper Karl Wills helpless.

Town’s nearest rivals in the title race Spennymoor Town won 4-0 at Ossett Albion, leaving them 10 points shy of the Yellows with a game in hand.

Warrington host Witton Albion on Monday, kick off 3pm.
