Northwich Victoria 3 Warrington Town 2

WARRINGTON Town’s 15-match unbeaten run is over as they fell to title rivals Northwich Victoria this afternoon.

Yellows, who last lost in the league 3-1 at home to Burscough on October 20, looked set for a share of the spoils until Vics captain Mike Clarke struck an 87th-minute winner.

Town remain top of the Evo-Stik First Division North table though with destiny still in their own hands, their lead now 10 points while Vics have three games in hand.

All five goals came in the second period, the first coming two minutes after the restart as Town went ahead for the only time in the game.

Vics failed to clear the danger and Danny Ventre was in the right place at the right time to fire home from the edge of the box.

The lead did not last long though.

Jimmy Ball squared things up for the hosts with a drive from outside the area four minutes later.

Northwich went in front with a touch of good fortune.

Mike Lea deflected a cross past his own keeper Karl Wills.

Town had their own slice of luck as they returned to level terms in the 82nd minute.

Scott Metcalfe’s corner was cleared back to him and in ping-pong fashion he returned with interest and the ball settled in the net off the far post.

And the ding-dong nature of the scoring continued five minutes later when the greens went ahead for a second time.

Skipper Mike Clarke headed in from a corner to wrap up the scoring.
