TWO new signings impressed for Warrington Town as they returned to the top of the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North on Saturday.

The Yellows maintained their position as the league’s top scorers in a 4-0 win at Ossett Town.

Goals from Nathan Burke, Chris Gahgan, Ciaran Kilheeney and Jay McCarten took them to 62 in 24 games this season.

It saw Shaun Reid’s side extend their unbeaten league run to nine games, and the boss was pleased with the role his new acquisitions played in the win.

Phil Dean, formerly of Salford, Ramsbottom and Trafford, replaced the injured Scott Metcalfe in midfield, while ex-Wigan Athletic prospect Joe Holt caught the manager’s eye from the bench after arriving from Cammell Laird.

“Going into the back end of the season we needed to strengthen up top and in the wide areas,” said Reid.

“Both are utility players who can play anywhere across the middle.

“We lost Scott Metcalfe with an ankle ligament injury, but Phil Dean’s got four assists in his first two games and Joe Holt is a top class player.

“He was at Wigan and came through with the likes of Callum McManaman and Danny Redmond.

"Whenever we played against Cammell Laird he impressed and we felt it was the right time to go and get him – he could’ve scored a goal with his first touch.”

Reid was also delighted with another clean sheet, his side's 12th in the league this season, as Town prepare to welcome title rivals Northwich Victoria to Cantilever Park on Saturday.

“Ossett have had a bit of form but we were great from one to 16,” added the boss.

“We played some great football in difficult conditions as well.

“We only let them have one shot on target.”
