WARRINGTON Town maintained third spot in Evo-Stik Division One North thanks to Chris Gahgan's first-half goal against Scarborough Athletic in Bridlington on Saturday.

Gahgan was on hand to tap home the only goal of the game after Steven Gillespie's shot rebounded off a post.

The Yellows have now gone five games without defeat, despite the continuing absence of manager Shaun Reid who is recovering from illness.

And they introduced two new signings too on the north east coast, with striker Ben Deegan from Trafford and former Manchester United trainee Jack Rudge coming off the bench to play their part in this latest success.

Town started on the front foot at Scarborough's temporary home, until a new stadium is built.

Conor Roberts slid a quick free-kick in for Gahgan, whose hesitation put paid to the opening goal, before Gillespie struck twice over the bar.

Karl Wills was the first of the two goalkeepers to be tested, tipping over a long-range effort from Scarborough right-back Paul Robson.

Shortly after the 25-minute mark, Gillespie twice got in behind and it was on the second occasion that his left-foot shot beat the keeper and came back off the post for Gahgan to react quickly and poke home into the empty net.

Scarborough enjoyed their best spell of the match leading up to half time, without creating anything of note.

They continued that momentum into the second half, with left winger Dominic Rowe causing Ally Brown plenty of trouble, especially after the right back had found his way in to the referee’s notebook.

An increasing number of set pieces were being dealt with well by a combination of O’Donnell and McCarten, who played most of the second half carrying a knock that almost forced him off the pitch permanently before the hour.

Big forward Tom Corner was introduced off the bench by the home side, but the closest he came was when his header was easily held by Wills.

Six minutes added time had Warrington hanging on, but they could have put it to bed in the 95th minute when Ciaran Kilheeney, named captain for the day in the absence of regular skipper Craig Robinson, raced through and steered his shot just wide of the far post.

Warrington now have five wins and three draws to show from their nine league games this season, and are next in action at home to Clitheroe on Saturday.
