KARL Wills was the hero, saving two penalties, as Warrington Town won a dramatic shoot-out to lift a first trophy in 14 years on Thursday.

The Yellows had been held to a 0-0 stalemate by Farsley AFC in the final of the Doodson Sport Cup at Stockport's Edgeley Park.

But after the first three penalties of the shoot-out were missed, it was Town who held their nerve.

The impressive Ben Wharton, Scott Metcalfe and Chris Gahgan all scoring, before Wills saved Aiden Savory's effort.

It sent the 400 Town fans as well as players and officials into ecstasy in their final game of an historic season which saw them make the second round of the FA Cup for the first time.

There was little sign of the excitement to follow during an unremarkable first half.

Chances were few and far between with little creative play on offer.

It was the Yorkshire side who had the first opening on 14 minutes, Lewis Nightingale creating space down the right before seeing his near post toe poke blocked by Wills.

From the clearance, Wharton had a long range curling shot comfortably saved by Farsley stopper Tom Taylor.

Town's best chance of the half would come after the tricky Steven Tames' dribbling run was cut short 25 yards out.

Dead ball specialist Louis Corrigan's resulting free-kick on 33 minutes was spectacularly pushed over the top by Taylor.

If the first half was a stalemate, the second saw Town seize control of the match.

Corrigan almost caught Taylor out from another dead ball, from 35 yards out and a minute later on 56 minutes, Wharton had a header parried by Taylor and captain Craig Robinson flashed his header wider from the resulting corner.

By this point it was one way traffic, James McCarten's free kick flashed over from 25 yards before Robinson again came close from a corner on 63 minutes.

Warrington's best opening would come 10 minutes later, Wharton beating three on a jinking run into the penalty area before screwing a shot wide.

It looked increasingly like there would be only one winner, but with no extra time, Farsley could see the finish line and dropped deeper and deeper.

Indeed it took a tremendous last ditch tackle from Robinson on Savory to stop the striker bearing down on goal deep into the seven minutes of added time.

Farsley looked the more relieved to take it to penalties and went first, Spencer Harris' shot well saved low to his left by Wills.

Nathan Burke's effort was then brilliantly saved, high left by Taylor and when Farsley's Ross Daly did beat Wills, his shot struck the post and it stayed 0-0.

The next five kicks were scored, leaving Savory having to score. But Wills again denied him and Town had won.

The delight at the end similar to the scenes in Warrington's famous FA Cup run before Christmas.
