Farsley 1 Warrington Town 0

WARRINGTON Town slumped to a defeat at Farsley as their winning run away from home came to an end.

Gibraltar international Adam Priestley scored the game’s only goal with the home side’s first shot of the match in the second half to put a real dent in Warrington’s play-off hopes.

It was the first time Shaun Reid’s side had tasted defeat on the road in 2015, and the performance was one to forget.

On a hard pitch in a difficult wind, Warrington started brightest, with James McCarten heading over the bar at the back post from Louis Corrigan’s clipped delivery.

A five minute spell in the middle of the first half should have brought the opening goal for Town.

First Gerard Kinsella, who started in a five man midfield, should have done better with a shot from outside the box, hitting well over after Ben Wharton had held up the ball well.

Then top scorer Scott Metcalfe almost caught out the goalkeeper with a spectacular effort from all of 35 yards which Tom Taylor back-pedalled to tip over the bar.

Taylor also got the better of Metcalfe moments later, denying the left winger from close range.

The remainder of the first half was uneventful, through constant stoppages and a general stalemate in midfield.

Town had a penalty shout at the start of the second half as McCarten went down in the box following a David Mannix free-kick, but it was waved away by the referee, who also waved away a hard challenge on Warren Beattie which ultimately forced the tenacious midfield off for the rest of the game.

His replacement, Stephen Tames, barely had time to see the ball and Town had fallen behind.

Priestley sprung the offside trap to run on to a chipped ball over the defence by Ross Daly, and then finished well striking the ball across Karl Wills and in to the far corner.

Even falling behind failed to spark Town in to life, and a calamity at the back almost saw them two goals down. McCarten and Wills had a misunderstanding on the edge of the box, resulting in the defender poking the ball past the goalkeeper, only to see it come back off the post for Louis Corrigan to clear.

Farsley captain Robbie O’Brien went close twice, firing over from a good position before being denied by Wills, who was then sold short by a back pass which Town were fortunate to get away with.

There was very little action at the other end, and the anticipated fightback from Warrington never materialised, and in the end they fell to a 1-0 defeat, bringing to an end a run of seven away wins.

Warrington are next in action at home to Clitheroe on Tuesday, the first of three consecutive home league games.
