SHAUN Reid is confident Warrington Town are getting the best out of Scott Metcalfe and has challenged the forward to continue his scoring streak.

The attacker netted his 20th goal of the season on Tuesday, a sixth from the penalty spot, as the Yellows saw off Ossett Town.

Chris Gahgan was also on target in a 2-0 win.

And Reid believes the former Curzon Ashton man has proved wrong those who branded him a ‘hot head’.

“He’s a quality player,” said the Town boss.

“Early on, when I didn’t know him, I asked people about his character and some said he was a bit of a hot head.

“But he’s been nothing but a good player for me. He’s one who will always bring a bit of quality to the side; he’s can create and score goals.

“He’s got a fabulous goal return this season and hopefully he’ll go on and get another 10 or 15. That’s important and will really give the team something to build on.”

Metcalfe converted from the spot after being hauled down in the area, while Gahgan made it two before the break after rounding the keeper.

Town faced the final 35 minutes with 10 men after Warren Beattie was sent off, but held on to the delight of boss Reid.

“It was a difficult place to go and the club's record wasn’t great there over the past 10 years – I think they’d only won once,” he explained.

“We were very professional about it. It was a marked improvement from Saturday, when they looked a bit rusty after missing a fortnight because of the weather.”

Yellows now face a string of two-game weeks to catch up on their fixture backlog.

“It’s fabulous,” added Reid.

“It’s all about playing football matches. It amazes me when players in the Premier League complain about too many games when they’re treated like film stars.

“I enjoyed training as a player but I loved matches, they’re what you do it for. So it’s great to have games Tuesday/Saturday all the way in."

“I’ve challenged the players to go 10 matches unbeaten, that will put us in the play-offs. I’m quite confident we can challenge for that play-off place as other teams will be taking points off each other.

Reid also says the door is always open to Ciaran Kilheeney should he wish to return to the club.

Kilheeney, who spent last season with the Yellows, netted a hat-trick on Saturday to hand Droylsden a 4-3 win over Reid’s outfit; their first loss of 2015.

“We didn’t want Ciaran to leave but for family reasons, his wife was having a baby, he wanted to be closer to home,” said Reid.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for him and I’m sure at some point he will play under me again as we enjoyed a great relationship. He knows my door is always open – he’s a quality player.

“But we defended poorly. I won’t accept that from my team and they shouldn’t accept that either.”

Town host Farsley on Saturday and visit New Mills on Monday.
