ONE FA Cup winner is backing Warrington Town to extend their historic run in the competition this season.

Roger Hunt scored the opening goal at Wembley in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Leeds United in 1965, a year before lifting the World Cup with England at the same venue.

And Hunt, who started his career with Town when they were known as Stockton Heath, is not ruling out another Yellows upset on Sunday.

“Obviously everybody prefers a home tie, but they have played so well there’s nothing to stop them from beating Gateshead now,” said the 76-year-old.

“They’re higher up than Warrington but on the day it’s the FA Cup and we can cross our fingers.”

Hunt, who spent more than a decade at Anfield before joining boyhood favourites Bolton Wanderers, hopes Town’s run will continue to attract new faces to Cantilever Park.

Sunday’s trip to Gateshead will be their ninth game in the competition this campaign.

“It’s been great for the public and hopefully it will bring more people to the ground,” added Liverpool’s former record goalscorer.

“I go occasionally. As I work on the weekends it’s normally limited to midweek games, but I’ve always followed them since I began there.

“Hopefully they can get the result on the day. You see it all the time, in the last round and the round before, the unexpected teams have won so they have got a chance.”
