STRIKER Ben Wharton admits he worked the day of Warrington Town’s historic FA Cup giant-killing of Exeter City – to take his mind off the game.

The 24-year-old, searching for his first goal in this season’s magnificent run, could not settle ahead of what he called “the best thing I’ve ever done in football”.

“I couldn’t sleep the night before, none of the lads did. Everyone was up all night,” said the football coach, who was heavily involved in defensive duties as well as holding the front line with Scott Metcalfe.

“I was awake at 6.30am and I had to go to work just to do something and get myself out of the house. I couldn’t sit around. I was twiddling my thumbs and it was doing my head in.

“I had a session on Friday morning. The kids I teach had been wishing me luck for the game all week.”

The blonde haired striker, signed from Radcliffe Borough in summer 2013, was overwhelmed by the scenes following Friday’s heroics.

“I can’t even describe the scenes afterwards. It was unbelievable,” said Wharton, a former Stockport County YTS.

“I lost my voice with all the singing in the changing rooms afterwards. Everything at the end was just ridiculous. I’ve never known anything like that in my life.

After being informed that Warrington Town were trending on Twitter, he smiled and said: “Was I not? Ah well, maybe next time!”

Wharton’s work rate on Friday epitomises the mentality boss Shaun Reid expects his sides to show.

Reid added: “I like to think that’s the way I base my teams because I don’t think there’s anything wrong about a team going out there and working hard with passion, desire, throwing yourself in front of things, getting hit with the ball.

“That seems to be going out of the game but not with my lads.”
