FORMER England international Trevor Sinclair believes the roar of the home crowd can give Warrington Town an edge in tomorrow’s crunch FA Cup first round clash against League Two Exeter City.

The Yellows – who are preparing for the biggest home match in their 65-year history – have been warming up for the Cantilever Park match at Everton’s Finch Farm training base this week after the club’s usual Orford venue was fully-booked.

Town are managed by Shaun Reid, brother of former Everton player Peter.

Sinclair, who will be a BBC pundit at the match, admits the side are huge underdogs but is not ruling out a surprise result which would inevitably send the town into hysteria.

“It is going to be a really special occasion for Warrington Town and as players matches like this are electric,” he said.

“The atmosphere might just lift them and allow them to give an extra 10-15 per cent.

“You have to give the advantage to Exeter as being a league team, their players train day in day out.

“But their players may take this match for granted. Warrington are going to make it difficult for them and I am really looking forward to it.”

With the town set to be on standstill for the 90 minutes, Sinclair, who won 12 caps for England between 2001 and 2003, was full of praise for Evo-Stik outfit Warrington, who play in the eighth tier of English football.

“Warrington have nothing to lose,” said the 41-year-old. “They really apply themselves and I take my hat off to them – I am not sure I would have been able to do what they do.

“Some of their players might be thinking they have had bad luck in their career but it is never too late to turn it around.

“It will give them a chance to shine and is about the players having belief. Funnier things have happened.”

Sinclair acknowledged the importance of the match to the town and insists Shaun Reid has enough experience to execute a strategy – without calling on Peter, who currently manages Indian side Mumbai City.

“I am sure Shaun has enough experience – he will make sure the players go into the game with the energy required,” he said.

“In these games, the players who keep the coolest heads are important. It is about getting that energy, effort and tempo.

“That is the difference between having a good performance and a bad performance.”

Drafted in for the BBC’s first live FA Cup game in six years, Sinclair also admitted that he cherishes a certain FA Cup memory from his playing days – one that is sure to stick with him forever.

“My best FA Cup memory was winning the FA Cup semi-final with Cardiff in 2008 against Barnsley when Joe Ledley got the winner,” he added.

“We had a great group of players, including Aaron Ramsey and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and to do it was just brilliant.”

The Bluebirds lost the final 1-0 to Portsmouth but Sinclair feels Warrington can take inspiration from famous cup runs in recent years to show just what can be achieved – after all anything is possible with the magic of the FA Cup.
