LIVERPOOL Reserves have that winning feeling again thanks to Thursday’s success against Hull City Reserves at North Ferriby United.
Gary Ablett’s men tasted victory for the first time since January, setting them up for Monday’s Liverpool Senior Cup Final clash with Waterloo Dock at Marine and Wednesday’s final league game against Newcastle United at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Liverpool moved off the bottom of the Barclays Reserve Premier League North table with Thursday night’s win, sealed with goals from the returning Damien Plessis and Gerardo Bruna.
Reds, who handed Robbie Threlfall a start at left-back for his first reserve appearance of the season following his loan spell with Hereford United, also had Swiss international Philipp Degen on the bench and he slipped into right midfield for the final 20 minutes.
By then Liverpool held their slender 2-1 lead and, with no substitutes left, had to hang on with 10 men late on after Jay Spearing left the field with a leg injury.
Hull went ahead from the penalty spot in the 26th minute, Jamie Devitt firing into the bottom corner after he went down down under a challenge from Threlfall.
Frenchman Plessis stepped up to put Liverpool back in the game two minutes before half time, thumping home a long-range low blast.
But it was Argentinian Bruna who sealed the valuable three points 12 minutes into the second period.
From a counter-attack, Bruna was put clear by Spearing’s pass and he had no trouble beating City keeper Tom Woodhead with a low shot.
