Rylands bow out of Guardian Cup at the first hurdle

RYLANDS suffered Guardian Cup agony again, with last year’s runners up this time falling at the first hurdle 4-2 on penalties to a spirited Orford FC side.

The Gorsey Lane men were leading 3-2, only for a late Stuart Smith equaliser to take the game into extra time and hand Warrington and District League side Orford a chance to complete a superb comeback.

Orford had taken the lead in the opening 15 minutes through Liam McLaughlin, spurring a Rylands response from Walker and Scott Bakkor.

Dean Jennings slammed in Rylands’ third goal before Joe Holt reduced the gap and set the scene for the late drama.

Neither side could find a winner in the added time, so when Rylands’ Collard and Tebb missed their penalties it was left to that man Smith to step up and slot home the spot kick and knock out the Cheshire League side.
