Town stretch unbeaten run

WARRINGTON Town stretched their unbeaten run to five matches and jumped to fifth in the Evo-Stik Division One North table after a thriller against promotion favourites Curzon Ashton. Shaun Reid’s Yellows are flying high after back-to-back league wins in the last seven days, and they will hope to take that form into the FA Cup first qualifying round fixture against visitors Maine Road on Saturday, kick off 3pm. They then turn their attention back to league matters in mid-week, travelling to Bamber Bridge on Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm, in the hopes of maintaining their climb up the table.

TOWN made only one change to the side that hammered New Mills, Colin Flood replacing Peter Doran, and started brightly. Liam Shipton went close early on, but it was the visitors who struck first just after the half hour, Kristian Dennis turning to shoot past Adam Judge. Their lead was shortlived, former Liverpool and Macclesfield Town striker John Miles slotting in before Lee McEvilly scored his fourth goal in a week from the penalty spot to give the hosts the lead. They confirmed their dominance just before the break, Shipton capitalising on a weak clearance to curl a shot past the Curzon goalkeeper. Substitutions stimulated Curzon after the break, causing Town to retreat and concede a goal to former striker Tony Evans with 11 minutes left, but they managed to hold on for all three points. Town: Judge, Davis, Flood (Ruane, 69), Dogan (c), Flynn, McCarten, Shipton, Mooney, McEvilly, Miles, Reid.

WARRINGTON secured their first win of the Evo-Stik Division One North season in spectaular fashion with a six-goal drubbing of New Mills.

Town travelled to Derbyshire for their first away match of the season and immediately set about unlocking the hosts’ defence.

They took the lead in the ninth minute through Mike Reid’s lobbed header, before the visitors doubled their lead midway through the half thanks to Lee McEvilly’s sumptuous lobbed effort after Liam Shipton’s mazy dribble.

Mills pushed forward in search of the goal that would cut the deficit, but instead it was Warrington who stretched their advantage after the break thanks to Reid’s thunderbolt from the edge of the area.

From that point Town were looking to make it a rout, McEvilly securing his hat-trick with a second-half brace before substitute James Anderson scored his first senior goal to seal the Yellows’ emphatic victory.
