Appleton’s boys are Dutch stars
2:39pm Thursday 28th June 2012 in Football
Appleton Boys under 17s football team’s finest season was capped with overseas success at the weekend.
Neil Hutchinson’s boys won the Groene Star and Adeveo Schinen tournaments in Holland in style.
Facing teams from Germany, Belgium and the host nation, Appleton won all 10 matches played - scoring 28 goals and conceding only one.
On top of that, Ben Stevenson and Elliot Newsholme won the player-of-the-tournament awards, Dom Marie won the golden boot honour for his weekend’s efforts and James Anderson won the penalty shootout competition with 15 successive spot kicks.
Success came despite only arriving at the Groene Star Tournament 15 minutes before playing after being in collision with a motorcycle en route.
The eventful trip also included the coach breaking down on the way home and arriving at Dunkerque Ferry Terminal with only five minutes to spare.
Grappenhall’s season kicked off by winning the Birchwood Tournament last August.
They won the Warrington Premier Division title for the first time, but lost on penalties to Garswood in the Warrington Cup semi finals.
