Liverpool Senior Cup hopes shattered

Warrington Town 0 Bootle 1

FOLLOWING the win over runaway league leaders Curzon Ashton, Town should have been a side high on confidence but instead they looked distinctly lacking when they crashed out of the Liverpool Senior Cup to lower tier Bootle on Tuesday night.

Warrington were first to threaten with Jimmy McCarthy's free kick touched on to the post by centre half Levi Kennedy.

Visiting striker Anthony Hickey replied by forcing Town keeper Richie Mottram into a fine save.

Town almost went ahead shortly afterwards when Bootle defender John Martin nearly sliced a Phil Hadland cross into his own net.

Town did manage to get the ball in the net through Dave Roberts, only to see the linesman raise his flag for offside.

Bootle started the second half brightest and the visitors took the lead in the 50th minute.

Hickey beat defender Mike Grogan to the rebound after Mottram had saved O'Connor's initial effort.

Town searched for an equaliser but were unable to get into the game, only really testing Bootle’s defence in the last 20 minutes.

But it was too little, too late as the Yellows were incapable of finding an equaliser.

Town: Mottram, Grogan, Kinsey (Taylor, 79), Hardwick, Kennedy, Roberts, Hadland, O'Donnell, Chetcuti (Dutton, 71), McCarthy, Gahgan. Subs not used: Smith, Brown.
