WHILE four more Warrington Junior Football League cup finals will be staged at Victoria Park stadium on Saturday and Sunday, last weekend belonged to the Winwick Athletic Club.

Two of Winwick’s sides lifted trophies.

Jamie McGready netted twice as Wildcats defeated Wigan Junior Latics Blues 2-1 in the under 15s Alf Holt Trophy showdown.

And then Warriors came out on top 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out against Highfield Grange Athletic after the under 17s Alf Holt Trophy showdown finished 2-2 after extra-time.

The Warriors’ win was a particularly sweet moment for manager-coach Kath Cookson, as her side was close to folding after last season due to a shortage of players.

But the remaining eight boys were joined by players from Woolston Rovers and the new-look side were rewarded with silverware on Sunday.

Highfield went ahead through Lewis Morrison after 12 minutes when he beautifully chipped the advancing keeper.

The scores were levelled again when Mathew Kearsey slotted home nicely.

Winwick missed several chances until they took a deserved lead.

A run from Kearsey from the halfway line left him with the last defender to beat and after skilfully passing him he sunk home his second of the game.

With seconds left Uniackes fired home a penalty to force extra-time in which chances were created but no goals scored.

Zack Jones put away with aplomb Winwick’s decisive spot kick but goalkeeper Alex Banasik was the shoot-out hero, saving two of Highfield’s earlier penalties.

In the other game of the weekend, Rainford Eagles caused the shock of all the league’s finals by beating Newton le Willows Aces 3-2 in the under 16s Alf Holt Trophy decider

Division Three side Rainford went into this match as huge underdogs but shocked their Division One opponents after only 10 minutes.

Ben Hutchinson latched on to the ball in the area close to the keeper, nicked it past him and tapped home for 1-0.

Newton took only 5 minutes to reply. After a scramble in the box the ball broke to Ben Green who smashed into the back of the net.

Not long into the second half the favourites took the lead.

Nathan Fishwick tricked his way past one defender, and then coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the goal.

Newton by this time were taking a stranglehold on the game but it wasn’t to last.

Midway through the half Rainford were awarded a free kick 30 yards from goal at an angle.

Tom Preston settled himself over the ball, ran up and leathered it into the net to draw level.

The crowd was beginning to sense an upset and they were right.

After another foul Rainford were awarded another free kick, this time 40 yards out.

Up stepped Preston for another long-range blast and another brilliantly scored free kick!

Rainford managed to hold on their lead to lift the prize.
