Nantwich Town 2 Warrington Town 1
YELLOWS’ winless run stretched to four games as they went down to defeat at Cheshire rivals Nantwich on Saturday.
However, results around them meant they remained in second place, with nearest challengers Grantham Town being beaten at home by Mickleover Sports.
After Jack Higgins had hit the bar with an early header, Town did take the lead when Jamie McDonald was brought down inside the area.
The referee awarded a penalty, which Sean Williams dispatched despite home stopper Myles Boney guessing the right way.
However, the Dabbers equalised when Steve Jones’ driving run into the box found Toby Mullarkey, who slammed an effort beyond Luke Pilling in the Yellows goal.
Five minutes later, Nantwich were awarded a penalty of their own when Pilling rushed out to bring down Jones, with Harry Clayton sending the on-loan Tranmere stopper the wrong way from the spot.
The hosts finished the game with 10 men as Sam Wakefield was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Liam Goulding, but Yellows could not take advantage of the extra man to force an equaliser.
Warrington Town: Pilling, Carden (Bakare), McKeown, Jennings, McEveley (Beeley 46), Higgins, Leacock-McLeod (Piggott 56), Goulding, McDonald, Wiliams, Green. Subs not used: Barnes, Hayhurst.
