Warrington Town 1 Workington 1

YELLOWS dropped valuable home points in the Evo-Stik Premier Division as they were held to a draw by Workington.

Mekhi Leacock-McLeod gave Yellows the lead on his home debut before Dave Symington equalised for the visitors just after the interval to ensure they returned to Cumbria with a share of the spoils.

Paul Carden's side fall further behind leaders Altrincham, who thrashed Shaw Lane 5-1.

The first half was a cagey affair, with Leacock-McLeod having the first real chance when he beat his marker to a loose ball but dragged a shot wide of the near post when he ought to have hit the target.

Joe Piggott flashed a hopeful effort over the bar before Town were left indebted to keeper Luke Pilling for keeping the scores level.

After Yellows failed to deal with a free-kick, the on-loan Tranmere stopper first denied Conor Tinnion before spreading himself to deny Josh Calvert’s follow-up.

As the game settled down, however, the hosts took the lead thanks to a calamitous error from Reds custodian Aaron Taylor.

He spilled Adam Carden’s deep cross under pressure from Leacock-McLeod, who accepted the gift to poke into an empty net.

Workington had one more chance before the break as Tinnion found himself in space on the left, but Carden put him under sufficient pressure to ensure he skewed his shot wide.

However, they did much better when their next opportunity arose just after the interval.

Symington charged down the right and held off Rory McKeown before sliding a finish past Pilling.

Steven Rigg then cannoned an acrobatic effort narrowly wide before Devarn Green could only lob over the bar after a superb Gerard Kinsella pass put him through on goal.

Pilling then made another superb save to deny Matthew Douglas from close range while at the other end, Tony Gray could only curl over the bar after a corner fell his way.

Gray came much closer shortly afterwards as he curled a shot agonisingly wide after checking back onto his left foot.

Town huffed and puffed as they tried to force a winner, but they could not break down a resolute Workington defence.
