WARRINGTON Town are “fighting for every point” in their bid for promotion to the National League North, midfielder Sean Williams says.

With 13 games to go, Yellows sit second in the Evo-Stik Premier Division and appear well-placed to claim at least a play-off spot.

Nine points separate them with Grantham Town, the first team outside the all-important top five, as they aim for their second promotion in three seasons.

However, Williams says Town must only focus on themselves.

He also feels their robust defence has played a key role in their success, with only leaders Altrincham and fourth-placed Shaw Lane conceding fewer goals than Paul Carden’s side so far.

“Everyone beats everyone in this league. We just have to try and stay consistent as the pressure builds at the business end of the season,” he said.

“The only thing we can do is keep picking up as many points as possible and see where it takes us.

“If we can get a run together between now and the end of the season, it gives us every chance.

“We’ve got a good defensive unit at the moment, but that starts up front.

“Jamie (McDonald), Tony (Gray) and Joe (Piggott) bring a press that people don’t want to live with.

“They trigger everything so as soon as they go, everyone goes.

“We’ve got key players out defensively as well. Jay McCarten will be a massive addition when he comes back.

“The lads feel strong. There’s a willingness to fight for each other.

“We’re fighting for every point because we know we are so close to where we want to be.”

On a personal note, Williams is enjoying the best goal-scoring season of his career having hit the net 10 times in all competitions.

Six of those goals have come from the penalty spot, but the 26-year-old says he is just happy to be contributing in whatever way he can.

“Last year, I realised I don’t think I’d scored more than four or five goals in a season,” he said.

“If you look at top central midfielders over the years, they have always scored goals.

“Hopefully, this might spark something for the future where I can keep adding goals and getting to double figures.

“Whether they’re penalties or not, it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet.”
