WARRINGTON Town boss Paul Carden says an enforced break from action will be of benefit to his side.

Yellows saw their game against Stalybridge Celtic postponed on Saturday, one of 10 games in the Evo-Stik Premier Division to fall victim to the weather.

Saturday’s FA Trophy game against Altrincham is the first of five games in 16 days for Carden’s side as they prepare for a busy Christmas period.

However, while stressing he would use the break as a positive, the Yellows boss is wary of the effect a backlog of games could have later in the season.

“You don’t want games called off in case a backlog builds up, but you can’t control the weather,” he said.

“It gave us a chance to give the lads a bit of a break. They have had a busy time.

“We’ll certainly be better for it going into this busy period of games over Christmas.

“We’ll have to see what happens, but if our games are being called off then it will likely be the same for other teams.

“We want to be at the same stage as games in hand can hurt you.

“As long as we’re not playing catch-up on other teams, that’s the main thing.

“You know you’ve got to win when teams have gained on you and it’s a different pressure going into the games when you’ve built up a backlog.”

The festive fixtures are likely to test Carden’s squad to its limits, with numbers especially low in defence.

Centre-half Jack Higgins is suspended for Saturday’s clash with the Robins, while right-back Shaun Beeley is still some way off a return from a broken leg.

Carden says he “has the feelers out” for defensive cover but is reluctant to overexert himself in the transfer market.

“I’m not breaking my neck to bring anyone in,” he said.

“We haven’t got a massive squad at all, with Jack Higgins suspended and Shaun Beeley still the best part of a month away from coming back.

“We’re always on the lookout for the right type coming in, but we are short defensively.

“We are looking without chasing round. The feelers are out and if anything comes back that is right for us, we’ll look to do something with defensive cover.”
