PAUL Carden insists there will be no complacency from his Warrington Town side in Saturday’s FA Cup first qualifying round clash with Grimsby Borough, kick off 3pm.

Yellows have been drawn at home to the Northern Counties East Football League outfit as they look to win their first FA Cup game since their famous 1-0 victory over Exeter City in 2014.

Saturday’s opponents ply their trade three tiers below Town in the football pyramid, meaning there would be a temptation to give some of his star performers a rest ahead of Tuesday’s tricky trip to Workington, kick off 7.45pm.

However, Carden says there will be no such changes and that he is taking the competition very seriously.

“We will put out as strong a side as we can and there will be no complacency,” the Yellows boss said.

“Whatever competition you are playing in, winning creates and continues momentum and that is what we want.

“It helps the club financially to get as far as possible in the cup as well as creating a positive energy on the pitch.

“I’m very, very keen to do well in this competition and so are the players. We want to get as far as we can.”

Warrington head into the game having beaten Matlock Town and Marine over the bank holiday weekend to send them top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

However, Carden believes his team have “only scratched the surface” of what they are capable of despite their impressive start to the season.

“It’s where we want to be. We want to have the challenge and pressure of staying at the top,” he said.

“I’m a big believer that good players thrive on that pressure.

“The lads were saying after the Marine game on Monday that we were just getting near what we can do.

“I feel as though we’re only scratching the surface of what is possible for this group.”

One of Town’s biggest positives has been the form of winger Connor Hughes, who is the team’s joint-top scorer with three goals alongside strikers Tony Gray and Josh Hine and midfielder Sean Williams, whose goals have all come from the penalty spot.

Carden says the former Oldham man’s impressive start comes as no surprise to him.

“Connor looks a threat. He looks like he’s going to score in every game,” he said.

“Even if teams start paying more attention to him and marking him closer, it will open the gates for the other capable goalscorers we have.

“We want the goals to come from everywhere and they are doing. We are in a good place.”
