TWO players of the same name, completely unrelated but impressing for sports teams in the same town? It could be said that it is the ultimate sporting coincidence.

The majority of Warrington’s sports fans will remember Michael Monaghan as the Australian who lit up The Halliwell Jones Stadium for Warrington Wolves during his six-year spell with the club that included three Challenge Cup trophies.

However, just down the road at Cantilever Park, Warrington Town supporters are now cheering for his Liverpudlian namesake.

“I’m not the biggest rugby league fan but I know all about him now!” the Town midfielder joked.

“I’d heard his name flying about before I joined Warrington but didn’t know too much about what he’d done.

“It’s a nice coincidence and hopefully people will remember me for positive things in Warrington as well.”

Monaghan joined Paul Carden’s side in January after a nomadic non-league career that sees him list Marine, Northwich Victoria and AFC Telford among others as former clubs.

He has scored four goals in 10 appearances, including one in Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat at Nantwich, a tally he is keen to add to.

Monaghan has played at a higher level but says the club’s ambition is what appealed to him and hopes to “find a home” at Cantilever Park.

“I got off to a great start here and scored three in my first three games,” he said.

“I’ve settled in really well, we’ve got a good squad of players who all get on really well with one another.

“The reason I came to Warrington was the ambition they are showing and for the chance to work for a manager like Paul Carden.

“I want to be around to help achieve those ambitions and hopefully find a bit of a home here.”

Yellows are currently an outside bet to make the play-offs in their first ever season in the Evo-Stik Premier Division with 11 games of the season remaining.

Their form has improved of late, but Monaghan says the players are staying grounded.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves, we know we’ve got to be consistent if we want to finish higher.

“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot and say we’ll definitely make the play-offs. There’s a lot of work to do but confidence is high at the moment.

“We’ve got a good squad. There’s a lot of new faces but we’re gelling quite well.

“We’ll take it one game at a time like always and see where it takes us.”
