Warrington Town 2 Tranmere Rovers 0

A MORE experienced Yellows outfit eased past a youthful Tranmere side to progress to the quarter-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

Goals in either half from Jon Shaw and Scott Metcalfe completed a routine win for Paul Carden’s side, who will travel to Witton Albion in the next round.

Carden named three debutants in his starting line-up in the shape of full-back Josh Askew, midfielder Michael Monaghan and striker Ruben Jerome.

The latter had two chances to open the scoring in the early stages, first hitting a rasping shot against the outside of the post before being denied by Rovers keeper Luke Pilling after striding through one-on-one.

Another golden chance fell Town’s way shortly after when Jerome flicked Askew’s cross into the path of Ben Deegan, but Pilling somehow kept his shot out at point-blank range.

It only seemed a matter of time until Yellows broke the deadlock and they duly did so just after the half-hour when Dylan Vassallo’s superb corner was powered home on the volley by Shaw.

Town should have gone in at half-time further ahead when Scott Harries, playing in an unfamiliar role at right-back, got to the byline and crossed for Jerome.

The debutant once again rattled the post with his shot, while Deegan fired the rebound over the bar with the goal gaping.

Tranmere improved after the break and went close to a superb equaliser when skipper Darren Askew let fly from distance, only to see his effort strike the outside of the post with Town stopper Tony McMillan beaten.

Rovers were made to pay for that miss minutes later when a superb pass from Mitch Duggan found Harries galloping forward and he pulled the ball back for Metcalfe to sweep home.

The second goal killed the game as a contest as both sides made changes late on.

Town substitute Euan Wood had a late chance to add his name to the scoresheet but he shot just wide when through one-on-one with Pilling, who also made another point-blank save from Jerome as the game drew to a close.
