DEPLETED Warrington Town became the latest side to draw a blank at Corby Town.

Only Marine have registered more home draws than the Northamptonshire outfit, who are residing third from bottom of the Evo-Stik League Premier Division but enjoying an upturn in form.

The Yellows, who fielded on-loan debutant Evan Gumbs at right back and stay 15th, were unable to prevent the hosts from chalking up a sixth tied affair at Steel Park but did prevent them from achieving a third win of 2017 against promotion chasers, having recently disposed of Spennymoor Town and Matlock Town.

In contrast, Town’s players could be forgiven for taking time to settle with a shuffled team in what was their first outing in almost three weeks.

As it was, only the width of the woodwork prevented either of these hard-working sides from taking all three points.

An Aaron Brown header clipped the top of the crossbar as the Steelmen came close to breaking the deadlock early in the second period.

And sadly for Paul Carden’s men the response was in kind, with Sam Ilesamni’s shot bouncing back off a post and into the grasping hands of goalkeeper Aidan Grant.

The Yellows, who were without Rory McKeown (Southport), Jay McCarten and Mitch Duggan (suspended), Sean Williams (broken foot), Danny Hattersley (ankle) and Gerard Kinsella (back), had other chances too.

Grant came to Corby’s rescue in the closing stages with a save to snuff out Ciaran Kilheeney’s hopes of becoming the last-gasp hero.

Grant also denied Kilheeney from close range in the opening moments of a fairly even but comparatively lower key first half.

Town goalkeeper Tony McMillan did his job in keeping out an effort from Ben Milnes but the best chance of the opening 45 minutes came when Jason Lee cleared off the line after Ilesamni had got round Grant.

A Kilheeney half-volley rose over the home nets and the striker was stopped at close range when his late goal opportunity beckoned.

There was still time for Corby to seek a late winner and there was an appeal for a penalty from the hosts but Milnes was instead shown a yellow card for diving.
