WARRINGTON Town boss Stuart Mellish has heaped praise on new signing Tom Peers after his flying start to life at the club, writes Matt Turner.

Warrington-born striker Peers arrived at the club from AFC Telford last week and marked his debut in Saturday’s 2-1 over Corby Town with a goal.

He continued in the same vein with the opener in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory at Blyth Spartans and Mellish says a long, drawn-out chase for his signature is so far proving worthwhile.

“We tried to get him in the summer but he chose to go to Telford. He wasn’t getting too many games there so we kept an eye on him,” he said.

“We managed to twist his arm and it’s a massive boost for the club.

“The last two games have seen two fantastic performances from lads like Ged Kinsella and Ciaran Kilheeney, both have been with Tom on the pitch. He can make all the difference to guys like that.

“He has great energy and work rate, bags of pace but can hold the ball up as well.”

Mellish was able to give a debut to midfielder Aaron Knight on Tuesday when goals from Peers, Kilheeney and Scott Metcalfe secured a victory that propels them into the Premier Division’s play-off places.

"I was delighted with the performance, we had a game plan and we stuck to it," Mellish said.

"I asked questions of the players after the Nantwich defeat and they have responded with great character.

"We have a habit of winning matches and bouncing back when we've been beaten. That show's we're a good side."

Knight and Peers join fellow new man Simon Lenighan in the squad and Mellish was delighted with his new additions.

“Aaron Knight is a player of real quality and massive potential,” he said.

“He’s strong, quick and has great feet. He’s come out of a two-year pro deal at Bolton so we’ve got a player of real pedigree.

“Simon Lenighan is top drawer, he should be playing at a higher level.

“He’s had some issues, but we want to get him enjoying his football again. His attitude has been first class.

"Within ten minutes of his first training session, the players were commenting on how good he was!"

Town travel to Skelmersdale United on Saturday, kick off 3pm, before hosting Buxton on Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm.
