Warrington Town 2-1 Corby Town 1

GOALS from Ciaran Kilheeney and new signing Tom Peers ensured the Yellows returned to winning ways against Corby Town.

With Nantwich having completed a remarkable late turnaround from a similar 2-0 deficit against Town four days earlier to win 3-2, nerves were evident when the Northamptonshire side pulled a goal back with eight minutes to play.

This time the Yellows held out, as a goal in each half from strikers Kilheeney and Peers proved enough.

Peers, who arrived at the club this week from Telford, made his debut up front in place of Steven Gillespie.

The Yellows were dealt a blow prior to kick-off, with Daniel Ventre ruled to not be fit enough to start, which meant a reshuffle in midfield and Simon Lenighan wearing the number four shirt.

It was an uneventful first half, Warrington unable to make anything of three consecutive corners early in the first half.

Corby’s best chance fell to Connor Kennedy, but it was Warrington who took the lead.

Kilheeney beat the defender to the ball and then finished nicely past the ‘keeper to give the home side a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Peers might have had a goal within five minutes of the restart, receiving Andy Nicholas’ low cross and just not being able to turn and get a shot away.

A speculative 30-yard effort from Lenighan marked the only real chance of note as Warrington started the second half on the front foot.

That was until 54 minutes, when the second goal arrived through Peers, who left the ‘keeper completely wrong footed and poked a shot slowly past him.

It looked like being a routine win for Warrington, with Corby, winless away from home this season, offering little in attack.

The first sign of any nerves came on 75 minutes when Karl Wills fought to claim a free-kick on the floor.

And then the tension went up a notch, as Corby bagged through substitute Andre Johnson on 82 minutes.

Unlike Tuesday though, Warrington were able to close the game out and secure a welcome three points.
