Warrington Town 5 Matlock Town 3

THE Yellows head into today's clash with Marine on the back of completing a comeback over Matlock Town.

Warrington Town returned to winning ways in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division with an entertaining 5-3 win over Matlock Town on Saturday.

Big striker Ben Deegan made his first start of the season and repaid his manager with a brace as the Yellows fought from 2-0 and 3-2 down to secure their victory.

After Warrington had an early goal ruled out for a push, Matlock took charge of the game with two goals in three minutes. First, after a third successive corner, Matt Newsham flicked home at the near post, and then strike partner Marcus Dinanga rose highest at the back post to head them in to a 2-0 lead.

It was very nearly three eight minutes before the break when Marcus Williams’ tremendous free-kick clattered off the underside of the bar and out.

Instead, Warrington managed to drag themselves back in to the contest by half time. Grogan intercepted a Matlock attack and immediately launched the Yellows forward, releasing Deegan on the right and his cross was diverted home by Ciaran Kilheeney for 2-1 at half-time.

Barely two minutes after the restart the scores were level, Deegan heading home from Michael Grogan’s cross and it looked the momentum was all with the home side.

The visitors had other ideas, though, and Newsham fired them back in front.

But within six minutes, Warrington responded with their own double-salvo to take charge.

Deegan showed his poacher’s instinct to fire home a loose ball and then James McCarten flicked Scott Metcalfe’s free-kick in to the far corner.

Grogan made sure late on with a drilled shot from the right, teed up by Deegan.
