Spennymoor Town 4 Warrington Town 1.

TOWN followed up their opening day victory by slipping to a heavy defeat at fellow promoted side Spennymoor Town on Tuesday night.

The Country Durham-based side came up through the First Division North play-offs last season as the Yellows won the league at a canter, but the difference between the two sides was clear to see at The Brewery Field.

Stuart Mellish’s side fell behind midway through the first half when keeper Karl Wills saved Mark Anderson’s shot but David Dowson converted the rebound.

Wills was a busy man, making a fine double save from Dowson and Tom Craddock before the latter put the hosts 2-0 up before the break.

Spennymoor continued to dominate after the break but a combination of good goalkeeping from Wills and poor finishing kept Town in the game.

However, the hosts effectively sealed the game when Graeme Anderson drilled home after Warrington failed to clear a corner.

Indeed, the Yellows didn’t even have their first shot on target until the 77th minute through Gerard Kinsella, who pulled one back a minute later after a pass from Ben Deegan.

It proved to be no more than a consolation through as Armstrong grabbed his second in the closing stages.

Town: Wills, Turner, Clancy (Grogan, 76), O’Donnell, McCarten, Ventre, Harries (Winder, 73), Kinsella, Kilheeney (Deegan, 69), Metcalfe. Subs not used: Rudge, Gillespie.
