WARRINGTON Town manager Stuart Mellish says he is “extremely happy” with his summer business as the squad returns for pre-season training.

Five new faces will join up with their new Yellows teammates for the first time as they regather today, Thursday, ahead of the new season.

The latest new face is winger Sean Clancy, who signed from AFC Telford last week, and he joins defender Andrew Nicholas, midfielders Mike Grogan and Scott Harries and striker James Dean as new recruits at Cantilever Park.

“I’m delighted to get Sean into the club, he’s got vast experience of playing at a much higher level than this,” Mellish said.

“He’s been involved in teams that have been promoted from the Conference and Conference North so he knows about winning and what it takes.

“He’s quick, direct and scores goals. A lot of Conference teams wanted to sign him but he’s really up for the challenge of being part of what we’re building here.

“I’m extremely happy with the squad we’ve put together and we’re now looking forward to getting everyone in for training.

“It will be tough but this is a massive season for us, we need to make sure everything is done properly.”

The news comes hot on the heels of three players agreeing to re-new their contracts with the club for their first ever season in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League’s top flight.

Captain and top scorer Ciaran Kilheeney, defender Jay McCarten and goalkeeper Karl Wills, who all made it into the First Division North Team of the Season, will all remain with the club and Mellish is pleased to have tied the key trio down longer term.

“Those deals have been agreed in principle for a while, it was just a case of getting it all signed,” he said.

“All three of them were brilliant for us last year and it’s great to have that continuity down the spine of the team.”

On the other hand, Mellish has been dealt a couple of blows on the personnel front after winger Scott Metcalfe decided to leave the club.

The winger joined the club in 2014 and played a key role in the club’s promotion last season as well as the run to the FA Cup second round the previous year but has now joined Ashton United.

This follows the news of defender Craig Robinson’s departure to Trafford last week and both leave with the manager’s best wishes.

“We offered Scott a deal for next season but he decided to test himself elsewhere,” he said.

“He’s moved on to pastures new at Ashton but as soon as I knew he was of a mind to leave we moved very quickly to get Clancy in.

“It was a little bit different with Craig, we wanted him to stay in a player-coach role as he was brilliant for us in that respect last year.

“However, he wanted to play regular football and he was smart enough to know he may not get that here.

“Both of them have been key performers for us but we wish them all the very best.”
