YELLOWS captain Ciaran Kilheeney says the club’s “unbelievable” promotion was the main reason he returned to Cantilever Park.

The striker rejoined the club for his second spell in the summer having previously enjoyed two successful seasons with Town before leaving to spend the last campaign at Droylsden.

The second of Kilheeney’s brace in the title-clinching 6-1 thrashing of Prescot Cables on Saturday was his 40th of a goal-laden season but he says promotion has been a team effort.

“I came back for one reason and that was to win the league. Its job done now and we’ll be looking to kick on next season,” he said.

“It’s unbelievable, it’s been a long time coming. We’ve worked hard and now we can enjoy it.

“The main thing is the title, from one to eleven plus all the subs the lads have been superb all season.

“Personally 40 goals is brilliant to get, it’s a good landmark as always it’s a team effort.”

The game was watched by 1,411 fans, the highest crowd in the entire league this season, and the captain, who was also named the division’s player of the year at the weekend, says the crowd played a key role.

“The crowd were unbelievable today but they have been all season, we’ll all move on together to next season now with some new fans for the club,” he said.

“We need a couple of new additions obviously but with the morale, spirit and quality we’ve got in the team as it is I don’t see any reason why we can’t go all the way again.”

Joining Kilheeney in the heart of Town’s success was local lad Chris Gahgan, who scored the fourth goal on Saturday.

The winger echoed his captain’s sentiments by saying the team hoped to follow the likes of Darlington and Curzon Ashton in enjoying success in the league above.

“It’s been a brilliant day and a brilliant season, it’s a fantastic step towards where the club wants to go,” he said.

“We’ve won this league and I think we stand a good chance of getting back-to-back promotions like teams from this league have done before.

“I think we can take inspiration from the likes of Curzon Ashton, Salford and Darlington who have done well after winning promotion.

“That’s what Toby wants us to do and we’re all pulling in the same direction.”
