CHAIRMAN Toby Macormac is building a ‘great football club’ at Warrington Town, according to boss Shaun Reid.

The Yellows won 5-2 on Saturday at Clitheroe to stay level on points with league leaders Northwich Victoria and make it seven points from a possible nine during a tricky festive spell.

Nathan Burke and Chris Gahgan both netted twice for the visitors, with skipper and top scorer Ciaran Kilheeney adding the other.

Burke’s second was set up by debutant Phil Dean, and Reid praised chairman Macormac for making the capture of the former Salford City, Trafford and Ramsbottom winger possible.

“Toby is building a great football club because when I first came we couldn’t get players to come here,” said the 50-year-old.

“I have to say a special thank you to my chairman as when I have asked to strengthen he has backed me all the way.

“We have our disputes and then we come out fighting. We’ve got a quality working relationship and that’s the basis of everything happening at this football club – he’s a pleasure to work with.”

Reid may add further to his squad this week with Dean, who can also play at left back, acquired to help strengthen Town’s title tilt.

“He’s a very talented boy and gives us pace,” added the former Rochdale midfielder.

“He’s done well against us for Salford and we knew him from his Trafford days. He’s very quick and did smashing for the fifth goal, showing a bit of composure to pick out Nathan Burke.”

Yellows are the top scorers in Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North this season, netting 58 times in 23 games, and also boast one of the division’s meanest defences.

Reid’s boys have opened an 11-point lead on Glossop in third place, but table-topping Vics – who Town face on January 16 – occupy the only automatic promotion spot and boast three games in hand.

“It shows we are playing the right way and at the moment we are doing things right,” he explained. “The boys are very committed.

“We are still keeping clean sheets and that’s pleasing. We’re scoring goals and we’ve got a defence that’s outstanding.

“Craig Robinson, who is a very good player, can’t get in the side at the moment so it shows what a standard they are setting.”

And Reid is confident his side can maintain their promotion charge.

“The players aren’t getting carried away,” he added.

“They came in on Saturday after winning 5-2 and were digging each other out over the goals they conceded. That’s brilliant that they’re self-policing themselves.

“We are there to guide them, but it’s all about the players and continuity. When you have players wanting things to be perfect, that’s a side that believe they can go on and challenge for the title.”

The Cantilever Park outfit visit Ossett Town on Saturday, kick off 3pm, looking to continue a run that has seen them unbeaten in the league since October.

“We’ve got goals in our side and we’ve got different people scoring, so it’s about maintaining that,” continued Reid.

“Chris Gahgan stepped up with another two goals on Saturday and had a good game, while Jay McCarten was outstanding at the back.

“But it’s hard to pick out individuals at the moment.”
