Warrington Wolverines 4 Blackpool Ladies 2

WARRINGTON Wolverines reached the second round of the Argyle Cup with a win over Blackpool in Orford.

Goals from Sam Hassall netted a hat-trick with Kaydi McHugh adding another to set up a clash with the winners of Woolton versus Carlisle.

However it was Blackpool who put the ball in the net first with a strike from outside the box.

Wolverines kept battling hard and that paid off on 42 minutes.

A switched ball from McHugh found Hassall, who ran the ball into the box and fired an effort into the roof of the net.

Wolverines were forced to make a half-time change which saw the injured left winger Laura Parkinson come off for Julie Crook as a straight swap.

From the off after the break Wolverines put the pressure on Blackpool which led to the first goal of the second half in the 50th minute. Nic Chatterley whipped a superb corner into the box for McHugh to head into the top corner and put the hosts ahead.

A stroke of bad luck for the Wolverines led to a Blackpool equaliser one minute later when the away team’s free kick met the head of player manager Wendy Booth and ended up in her own net.

There was more bad luck for Wolverines moments later when Chatterley went down in the middle of a run with a pulled hamstring, resulting in her game ending. She was replaced by Rachel Dickenson.

But the hosts’ luck finally turned on the 63rd minute when Wendy Booth split the Blackpool defence with a beautifully weighted ball through the middle for Hassall to run onto, take round the keeper and slot into the net.

There was still time for another, with Hassall completing her hat-trick in added time when she collect Dickenson’s ball and fired into the bottom corner.

Wolverines are back in league action when they visit Mersey Girls on Sunday.
