LESSONS learned over the past two season can help Warrington Town maintain a challenge for promotion this season, according to boss Shaun Reid.

The Yellows made it 10 wins from their past 12 games with a 1-0 victory over Farsley Celtic on Saturday, thanks to Ally Brown’s second-half strike.

Town missed out on promotion in the play-offs in 2013 while an FA Cup run left Reid’s side too much ground to make up last season.

But they are now back on top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North, albeit having played four more games than third-placed Northwich Victoria.

“We were in Northwich Victoria’s position last year with the FA Cup with games in hand,” explained Reid.

“You are looking at the games you’ve got to play and trying to work out how many points you can get, but it’s the points on the board that count.

“We’ve got to play them twice and we’ve also got to play (second-place) Glossop twice. You’ve got to look to take points off the sides around you and stay consistent.”

Following a 10-game unbeaten run, including nine wins, Town responded to defeat against Burscough at the first attempt.

“When you are on one of those runs you know a blip is going to come at some point,” added Reid.

“If Manchester City, Chelsea, United and Arsenal can lose games, then Warrington Town will eventually lose a game of football.

“But the most important thing was the character we showed against Farsley to win 1-0.

“I’m not saying we played well, but we grafted out a result and that proves we can win both ways after the 6-3s and 5-0s – we can also grind out a win.”

However Reid insists he will not be afraid to strengthen the squad should targets become available.

“When we are winning games, the team picks itself,” he said. “One thing I will do, though, is improve the squad if I think I need to.

“I stayed with pretty much the same 18 when we reached the play-offs and it was a mistake, so if there’s a player who can take us to another level I will do it.”

The Yellows switch their attention to an FA Trophy first qualifying round home clash with Brighouse Town this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

“The final of this competition is at Wembley, so anyone who doesn’t want to try and get to that is in the wrong game,” added Reid.

“If we can keep going in the cup it will only breed more confidence.

“They’re a good team and have been on a decent run recently, so it won’t be an easy game.

“Warrington Town is a big scalp for everyone in the league now as we are top and because of the FA Cup run last year.

“People will treat playing us like that. Some days it’s not going to be pretty football, but we want to keep in the habit of winning games.”
