WARRINGTON Town opened their league season with a 2-2 draw at Bamber Bridge on Saturday, despite trailing by two goals on 79 minutes.

A double for ex Southampton, Blackpool and Preston striker Brett Ormerod put the title favourites ahead, but Town snatched a point thanks to late Scott Metcalfe and Ciaran Kilheeney efforts.

Ormerod opened the scoring after 16 minutes, with Shaun Reid's side failing to clear a Jamie Milligan free kick and the 38-year-old turning in a Glenn Steel header.

Curtis Thompson hit the post from an Ormerod cross soon after, with Town keeper Karl Wills then called into action to deny Alistair Waddecar.

Town began to pour forward after the break and Ben Wharton's header hit the bar from a Metcalfe corner, before Chris Gahgan twice went close.

Gahgan was involved again as Town struck the post for a second time, teeing up Nathan Burke who half-volleyed against the woodwork.

But it was Bridge who extended their lead with 11 minutes to go, Ormerod steering home from 30 yards with Wills stranded.

It took the Yellows barely 60 seconds to pull one back, Metcalfe's tap-in giving Town hope.

Three minutes later they were level, with debutant Ally Brown crossing for Kilheeney to guide a header over Marcus Burgess.
