GREENALLS and Styal played out a goalless draw at Tetley Walker on Saturday.

The hosts were unable to build on their opening-day victory against rivals Eagle, while it proved a first point of the season for Styal after their defeat to Rudheath Social.

“It was disappointing and actually felt like a defeat," said Greenhalls boss Phil Harrison.

"After the elation of Tuesday night’s derby victory over Eagle, this draw lacked tempo and energy which is the opposite of the team that Ste Perrins and I are trying to create.

“On the positive it is a learning curve and two clean sheets to open up is a great foundation to build on."

Greenalls’ first chance fell to Daz Kinsey when full back Gareth Johns played the winger through only to see his strike saved at the Styal man-of-the-match Tom Needham’s near post.

On the half-hour mark Ellis Houghton’s change of pace down the right flank caught out the Styal full back who brought him down to earn Greenalls a penalty.

Up stepped Ben Slater who placed the ball in the corner to the keeper’s right only to be met by an outstanding save by the Styal shot-stopper.

Skipper Mark Hughes had a chance from a corner after the break, but was unable to guide his header on target.

Harrison and Perrins made three substitutions in quick succession to instigate some fresh legs onto the field.

Jordan Rigby, Adam Whitty and Neil Sutch were called to action and provided a spark.

Sutch fed Rigby through who created half a yard and fired narrowly wide, followed by Whitty delivering a great ball across the face of the opposing goal only not to be met by any green shirts.

Rigby was forced off due to a knee injury leaving the home side to play out the remaining 15 minutes with 10 men.

Styal’s Alex Whelan broke free at the other end and forced an outstanding double save from the impressive Conor Yarwood as they looked to make the extra man advantage pay, this was only until left back Harry Maylett was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Greenalls enjoyed a 1-0 win over Eagle Sports four days earlier.

A solitary goal from lively forward Lee Vaughan was the decisive factor between the two.

Craig Hall and Owen Ellis went closest for Eagle.

The game began quite frantic and it took both sides 10 minutes to settle into the opening fixture.

Eagle had the first chance as Owen Ellis headed wide and shortly after fired straight at Conor Yarwood in the host’s goal.

Greenalls swiftly began to take control as they pressed high forcing the error from the Eagle defence.

New signing Darren Kinsey combined with Ben Slater to thread Ellis Houghton through he attempted to lob his former team mate Craig Clare in the opposing goal only to narrowly put the chance wide.

Twenty-four minutes was how long it took for the deadlock to be broken as Kinsey pressed the full back and the ball fell to man-of-the-match Lee Vaughan who fired the ball home to open his account for the new year.

Further chances fell to Kinsey, Vaughan and Slater before half time but all went astray, Greenalls had to settle for the one goal.

After the restart Eagle began to play the football they are recognised for, moving the ball quickly up front but the back four of Clarke, Hynes, Prescott and Johns stood firm.

The two clear chances of coming back into the game were missed by Craig Hall and Ellis as both failed to hit the target when well placed.

The Greens could have doubled their lead as Kinsey struck the bar with a long range free kick and Vaughan again broke the back line only to be denied by Clare.
