TALENTED young footballers from a Lymm school are heading to Everton’s Goodison Park for a shot at bringing home some silverware.

Statham Community Primary School’s year four team earned the right to play at the Premier League outfit’s ground by progressing through two qualifying tournaments.

Having finished second behind Stockton Heath Primary School at the first stage, the pair were invited to Everton’s Finch Farm training base to face the best of the north west.

There the seven-man squad – featuring players from Lymm Rovers and Egerton FC – won their group with six victories in seven games to reach tomorrow’s final, Thursday.

“It’s been a long journey really,” said coach and year four teacher Jon Leatherbarrow.

“Going to Finch Farm was really memorable. It was a great opportunity for them to play on that surface in those facilities and we won six of seven games.

“We’ve got a really good group in year four. Sometimes you get one or two head and shoulders above the rest, but we’ve got four or five who are really good players.

“None are attached to professional clubs yet, but I’m hoping this final might bring some interest.”
