A YOUNG Warrington footballer has taken a first step towards following his dad into the professional game.

Bridgewater High School pupil Jack Holbrook has signed youth terms at League One outfit Rochdale.

The 12-year-old centre back’s impressive performances for Appleton Boys led to him training with the Liverpool shadow squad and then Wigan Athletic before the Spotland side secured his services.

And it sees him enter the Football League system several years quicker than dad Ian, who signed for Bolton Wanderers from Warrington Town on his 17th birthday.

“We’re very proud of what Jack’s achieved,” said the former goalkeeper, who also played professionally for Stockport County.

“He’s following in his father’s footsteps. He’s worked really hard and has got there quicker than I did.”

The graft will continue for Jack, who train three times a week on top of playing matches at Rochdale next season.

He has already featured several times for the club’s youth teams, but Ian says starting out with Appleton Boys as a six-year-old was a perfect platform for Jack.

“Appleton have been brilliant,” added the 59-year-old, who shared a dressing room with future England midfielder Peter Reid while at Burnden Park and was once recommended to Don Revie for an England under 21s call-up.

“Jack’s been outstanding at Rochdale and they love him there – it’s a great club.

“It’s a big commitment, but he’s really pleased about it.

“When you come down to the lower league clubs it’s a nice atmosphere and they really look after their kids.”
