Warrington Town 2 Farsley 1

WARRINGTON Town held off a second-half fightback to beat Farsley on Saturday.

An early goal from Tom Hardwick set the hosts on their way, before top scorer Scott Metcalfe added a second.

Mikey Aspin’s half volley gave Farsley hope in the second half, but Shaun Reid’s men hung on to claim another three points in their quest to climb the league table.

For the second successive Saturday, Warrington hit the front inside two minutes. Hardwick got up highest at the back post to head home from an excellent David Mannix corner delivery.

Farsley’s first chance fell to Gibraltar international striker Adam Priestley, who ran at the defence and unleashed a shot that was comfortably saved by Karl Wills.

Trickery from Mannix created space in the box at the other end, and his ball across the box just evaded both Metcalfe and Ben Wharton as Town pushed for a second.

The second came on 18 minutes, when Metcalfe was quickest to react after Nathan Burke’s low drive was pushed away by goalkeeper Tom Taylor.

Farsley enjoyed increased possession and territory for the remainder of the first half without really threatening Wills and Town took a 2-0 lead in to half time.

Craig Robinson led a fine defensive rearguard action after the break, and it took a good effort from Aspin to break their resolve, the right back’s effort from the edge of the box reducing arrears to one.

The visitors should have equalised on 68 minutes after a nice move ended in Lewis Nightingale firing wide from a good position.

As Farsley pushed forward, Warrington threatened on the break. Substitute Stephen Tames flashed a header across the box, before Wharton almost scored with an audacious lob from a Metcalfe through ball.

Nightingale flashed another shot just wide, before Robinson got a crucial block in to deny Andy Welsh.

In the end, Warrington held on for back-to-back victories. They travel to New Mills for their next league game on Monday night.
