WARRINGTON Town’s debut outing in the FA Cup first round can capture the imagination of the town, according to the club’s chairman.

Toby Macormac and boss Shaun Reid were present at St George’s Park National Football Centre on Monday to witness the Yellows land a home tie with League Two outfit Exeter City.

And chairman Macormac hopes the potential for a giant-killing at the Yellows’ Cantilever Park will grab the attention of a largely rugby league-dominated town.

“It’s huge for us to bring a Football League side to the town and it ranks as a massive achievement,” he explained.

“We are hoping for a sell-out crowd. They are 99 places above us in the league pyramid, they’re in training every day while our players are at work – it really is a David versus Goliath affair.”

Town have played seven games across five rounds to reach this stage, beating higher-ranked opposition on three occasions and earning nearly £30,000 in prize money along the way.

Macormac added: “The amount of exposure we have got from this cup run is not something you can go out and buy, it’s great for everyone involved in the town.

“When we did our pre-season budget we would have never put in for prize money to reach this round.

“It will be a great day for the players to be involved in the first round of the FA Cup and to play against a league side, there’s the chance of a giant-killing.”

Lewis Field’s goal against North Ferriby United on Saturday earned the Yellows entry into the competition proper for the first time in the club’s 65-year history.

“When I took over here there were people in the town who didn’t even realise Warrington had a football club,” said Reid.

“We are moving forward and we’re not going to take our foot off the gas, if we can make history once then we can do it again.”

For Warrington Town Supporters’ Club chairman Rob Wood, next weekend’s clash will rank as the biggest game in the club’s history.

“Saturday was the biggest game, prior to that it was beating Merthyr Tydfil in the FA Trophy replay in the last 16 in 1993,” he explained.

“The last time we reached the FA Cup first round draw was 20 years ago, we lost to Hyde in the replay when they were a Conference side and would have had Darlington, in the Football League at the time, at home.

“We had a very, very good side then and lost out on promotion in the last game of the season, but this one has better team spirit, the lads are all good mates and that goes far.”

Town are back in Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One action this weekend when they travel to Droylsden.
