ON the back of progressing to the FA Cup second qualifying round, Warrington Town boss Shaun Reid has strengthened his side with the addition of a former Everton trainee.

The Yellows knocked out higher-ranked Trafford on Saturday, with Scott Metcalfe’s penalty setting up a home tie against the world’s oldest club, Sheffield.

However, Reid has secured what he believes is a ‘real coup’ for the club in signing ex-Southport and Telford midfielder Alan Moogan along with former Yellows loanee Robbie Booth.

“He is an excellent player,” said Reid. “He’s very experienced and a real coup for the club because Telford are three or four leagues higher than us.

“Robbie was at Telford last year and came on loan for a couple of games but has joined us full time.

He’s a good addition to the squad and the competition for places is really tough now.”

Saturday’s winner came after Ben Wharton’s lobbed shot was handled on the line by Steve Mason, who saw red, and Metcalfe stepped up to finish from the spot.

Reid was delighted with his side’s performance and is looking forward to facing 1857-founded Sheffield.

“It was an excellent win against a very good Trafford side,” said the former Rochdale midfielder. “That’s what we have looked for since the beginning of the season.

“You always want to pit yourselves against better teams to see where you are at.

“We worked on our defensive set-up and they put that into action. Everything went to plan, they kept a great shape and we started very quickly.

“Even before they got a player sent off we looked good and that was very pleasing. Sheffield are the oldest football club in the world so they’re steeped in history and it’s another test for us.”

First the Yellows host Spennymoor Town in the Evo-Stik First Division North this Saturday.

“They have had an up and down start but it’s always a tough test against the north east teams,” added Reid.

“We’re four games unbeaten and we want to go on a run like last season. After last year everyone wants to beat us.”
