EAGLE Sports were made to work hard for their place in the second round of this season’s Guardian Cup, needing extra time to beat fellow Cheshire League side Moore United 4-2 on Saturday.
Lower division Moore stunned the visitors when they took an early lead courtesy of John Darbyshire in the Warrington and District League competition tie, and despite some pressure from Eagle managed to hold onto it until the interval.
The breakthrough for Eagle came in the second half through Ged McAllister and the scores remained level to take the game to an extra 30 minutes.
Eagle took the lead soon after the restart via Lee Boardman before Moore grabbed an equaliser through Robert Appleton in the second period.
With the tie looking destined for penalties with minutes remaining, Boardman and substitute Chris Quirk scored two in quick succession to finish the game in dramatic fashion and send Eagle through.
Eagle: Naden, R.Bishop, G.Williams, C.Hall, N.Williams, Nixon, Hope, Burthem, L.Boardman, Wellstead, McAllister. Subs: Waldron, Stratulis, Lees, Quirk.
* Eagle Reserves were beaten 2-1 by Daten in Cheshire Reserve League One when a late blow came after Andy Dawson’s equaliser.
