Sylvia Gore MBE, aged 68, was awarded a commemorative medal by the president of the Football Association, Prince William, for her service to the women’s game and grassroots football.
Gore is regarded as one of the pioneers of women’s football in this country and has dedicated her life to volunteering for Liverpool FA.
HRH The Duke of Cambridge said: “In our 150th year, it is hugely important for the FA to honour the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level.”
FA chairman Greg Dyke added: “These volunteers are the heartbeat of football. Without them, the game simply wouldn’t function at a grassroots level and it is only right that the FA honours their tireless and selfless work.”
