Ben Wharton scores as Town beat New Mills

Warrington Town 2 New Mills 1
WARRINGTON’S third successive league win, their fourth in all competitions, steered them towards the table’s upper reaches.
They survived an early scare when Jamie Rother’s volley crashed back off the crossbar, taking the lead soon afterwards when Ciaran Kilheeney scored from the penalty spot after a defender had handled.
Debutant Josh Cook was called into action on the half hour mark, tipping around the post from Daniel Grimshaw’s free kick, while fellow newboy Scott Metcalfe curled over at the other end.
Cook saved low from Rother’s drive after the interval before James McCarten dived in for a smart block to deny the rebound.
Despite New Mills’ pressure, the hosts doubled their lead on the hour when Craig Robinson’s long ball was not cleared, allowing Ben Wharton to lash home.
The Millers responded with Michael Fish’s consolation late in the game.
Town: Cook, Davies, Thompson, West (Millington), McCarten, Robinson, Gahgan, Mannix, Wharton (Newby), Kilheeney, Metcalfe. Subs not used Dogan, Mooney, Dawson.
