GRAPPENHALL Sports earned new manager Darren Davies his first point on the opening day of the Division Two season.
Sports, relegated after a difficult 2012/13 campaign, led for 13 minutes of the second half against the league’s newcomers but their rhythm was affected by injuries to three players.
Davies said: “It was a big day for them with it being their first game in our league and they started brightly.
“We then settled and started to play and deserved the lead we got.
“The injuries hit us but we thought we’d won it in the last minute only for it to be ruled out. A pleasing point in the end though.”
After a nervous opening 20 minutes, Sports started to dominate possession without creating many chances.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Matt Ball slotted home after a goalmouth scramble following a corner from skipper Kurt McCarthy.
Some good chances were wasted and the home keeper made some excellent stops.
A sloppy bit of play led to a full back crossing for the Barnton striker to head home well.
It was then that Sports lost Mick Gore and Ranni Dwhahli with hamstring injuries as well as Sam Shaw with an ankle problem, forcing changes.
Gareth Powell made a great save before Danny Sisson’s headed goal was contoversially ruled out for offside in the final seconds.
