Promoted Glazebury open with win

DELAYED two weeks by the inclement weather, Glazebury started their season in Mellor Braggins Cheshire Cricket League Division Three with a low-scoring win against Alderley Park at The Lane.

Batting first, the loss of two early wickets left Glazebury rocking until experienced pair Wayne Hargreaves, 16, and Chris Lord, 25, steadied the ship with a match-high partnership of 36.

But 44 for 2 soon became 60 for 6 as the visiting attack started to take control, with only the innings of all-rounder Jack Warhurst, 32 from 66 balls, ensuring the hosts had a protectable total of 102.

Last season’s promotion effort was built on the strength of the bowling resources and Glazebury were still able to call on this reserve.

Marsh was the spearhead of the Glazebury attack, returning excellent figures of 5 for 23 in 11 overs, backed by 3 for 21 from Warhurst and a steady 2 for 16 from the ever-improving Matt Shailer.

That bowling performance meant a 22-run win for the hosts, a maximum 25-point win to boost the confidence ahead of their trip to Stretton on Saturday.

It was a similar story for the second XI in Division C, with the superb bowling of Chris Ayre saving Glazebury’s blushes after a less than impressive showing with the bat.

Only Glazebury’s Patrick Hutchinson, 22, made a decent contribution as they fell for 89 to leave themselves a mountain to climb.

But Ayre, 4 for 18, helped them on their way because Disley, despite reaching 76 for 4, slumped under the pressure of his deliveries and fell to 86 all out.

They will be looking to make their early season double a treble when hosting Winsford on Saturday.
